Local Business Directory Data

The resources and search tips listed in this box were provided by Prof. James Mellone, who thoroughly investigated multiple sources to assist a patron with the following inquiries:

  • How many small businesses are in Queens?
  • What's the best way to go about finding this information?
  • How many new businesses are registered within Queens?
  • How many are closed?

Databases listed below at New York Public Library (NYPL) may provide local business directory data.

Several search parameters/limits are available, such as:
-- Verified Businesses or Unverified Business or **Closed Businesses
-- Major Industry Group or SIC/NAICS
             -- State, County, Metro Area
             -- Year Established
             -- Years in the database

**Closed Businesses: It does not provide when a business has closed, just that they have closed, and the date of the last update in the database.

Notes:

  1. Several databases listed above must be used on site at the NYPL business library.
  2. Several databases listed above can be accessed remotely from NYPL or Queens Public Library if you have a library card for either of them.
