NEH Summer Institute for Teachers (NYPL)Drawing on the rich resources of the Schomburg Center, the Harlem community, and new scholarship, this two-week virtual institute expands the typical Civil Rights Movement narrative by focusing on struggles for educational opportunities in Harlem. From the perspective of these events, a new story emerges: a movement often led by women; a movement employing a wider range of political frameworks -- including, but not limited to integrationism -- in the struggle for access to and equity in schooling; a movement as strongly situated in the North as in the South; and a movement that sought rich educational experiences, not just formal schooling. This institute will admit 25 teachers of grades 6-12.
