At Queens College, Dr. Nathaniel H. Siegel was a Professor of Sociology (1967-1979) and Dean of Faculty and Provost (1970-1977).
He was acting president of the college from Spring 1977 through Spring 1978.
“Provost Nathaniel Siegel will become acting president Jan. 1. The Board of Higher Education (BHE) will appoint a search committee in the near future to find a permanent successor.
Murphy has spent the last two years almost exclusively fighting for more money for the College, and few at the College were surprised that Murphy decided he had had enough.
‘I thought there was a likelihood he might leave two years ago,’ said Siegel. ‘He’s a very able guy, an attractive guy, and I suppose the opportunities grew.’
Most reactions at the College were of regret and apprehension, but few blamed Murphy for leaving. They felt Murphy has already guided the College through the worst of the budget crisis.
‘The response has been one of shock and abandonment,’ said Siegel. ‘But I don’t think this is a sinking ship. The school’s going to continue.’”
“Dr. Siegel had the support not only of a substantial segment of the search committee but also of the majority of the Queens College students, many faculty members and four of the five campus newspapers. He also had the backing of numerous Queens residents and political leaders, including Donald R. Manes, the Borough President.
His supporters viewed him as a capable administrator who would strive to uphold academic standards and continue to tie the college closely to the community. He was viewed as one who would resist efforts by the Chancellor, Dr. Robert K. Kibbee, and the board to sacrifice the interests of Queens residents to the overall good of the university.”
