Queens College Presidents

A reference guide to Queens College Presidents and Acting/Interim Presidents

Acting President

Dr. Thomas V. Garvey was Provost and later Dean of Administration at Queens College, from the 1940s through the early 1960s.

He was acting president from Spring 1956 through Spring 1958. His presidency spanned two periods: first, while Dr. Theobald was on leave as Deputy Mayor of New York City, from January 1956 through January 1958; and second, after Dr. Theobald resigned from Queens College and the search for the third president began, during the Spring 1958 semester.

Dr. Garvey's presidency

“Dr. Stoke will be the college’s third president. The late Dr. Paul Klapper was the first president from 1937 to 1949.

Dr. John J. Theobald has held the post since, but during the last two and one-half years has been on leave of absence to serve as Deputy Mayor. Meanwhile, Dr. Thomas V. Garvey has been provost pro tem and acting head. Dr. Theobald is scheduled to become city Superintendent of Schools on Sept. 1.”
