Applied Linguistics addresses a broad range of real-life language-related issues by developing its own knowledge-base about language, its users and uses, and their underlying social and material conditions. This interdisciplinary field relates to education, psychology, communication research, anthropology, and sociology, among many others.

The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) is a non-profit organization founded in 1959. Headquartered in Washington DC, CAL has earned an international reputation for its contributions to the fields of bilingual and dual language education, English as a second language, world languages education, language policy, assessment, immigrant and refugee integration, literacy, dialect studies, and the education of linguistically and culturally diverse adults and children.

The International Pragmatics Association (IPrA) is an international scientific organization devoted to the study of language use. Established in 1986, it now has on average 1,500 members in over 70 countries world-wide. It represents the field of pragmatics, i.e. the science of language use, in its widest interdisciplinary sense as a functional (i.e. cognitive, social, and cultural) perspective on language and communication.

The aim of the LINGUIST LIST is to provide a forum where academic linguists can discuss linguistic issues and exchange linguistic information.
