Translanguaging Pedagogy

Translingual, Translanguaging, and Transtrauma Stance

The Fall 2022 Professional Development series for First Year Writing is led by Dr. Khánh Le, a Substitute Assistant Professor of Multilingual Literacies in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Disorders who is developing the English 109 course and conducting research on multilingualism at Queens College.

In the first workshop, Dr. Le discussed how faculty can anchor their teaching in translingual, translanguaging, and transtrauma pedagogical stances, which each think about how to leverage students’ lived experiences and their dynamic language practices as assets and resources. Faculty members discussed how to build assignments and classroom activities (or modify existing ones) that are rooted in these stances. This introductory workshop covered some of the most recent best practices on how to approach issues surrounding language, linguistic discrimination, and accents while also being mindful of the ways that racialization can impact the judgement of writing.
