English Language Research Guide

Although this is primarily an education resource and not a one focused on linguistics, it is an excellent place to look if you are interested in the complicated relationship between education and language in a practical sense. For instance, bilingual education, code switching, and language policies are all of interest from this point of view.

A general “humanities” database, Humanities Source includes a little information on most fields that are often classed in the humanities. It includes many index terms having to do with language & languages and with the English language.

Both JSTOR and ProjectMUSE are multidisciplinary, full-text databases. They do not provide the sort of indexing you'll find in the other databases listed here, but they do allow you to search the full text of a document, which can sometimes be useful when you are looking for something very specific.

Our only database devoted specifically to the subject of linguistics, LLBA covers all aspects of the study of language. This includes both technical matters such as morphology and syntax and the historical social issues surrounding language. Includes books and book articles as well as journals.

MLA is a very important database for research on language, as well as literature. As with any search in MLA, you will need to pay attention to the subject headings. Common subject headings include the names of languages, technical linguistic terms, and terms relating to the theory and history of linguistics.
