The Music Library holds a number of rare books on music and scores, which are designated by an X before the call number in the CUNY Catalog. Scores include first edition publications, early American hymnbooks (some dating from the eighteenth century), and other gems. First edition books, including some nineteenth-century publications, as well as other hard to find items make up the book portion of the collection. Due to the fragile nature of these materials all items in the X collection must be used in the Music Library, and cannot be copied without express permission from the Music Library. Please request these items 24 hours in advance by calling or emailing the Music Library.
The Music Library hold almost 1,300 reels of microfilm and 6,000 microcards. These include back issues of periodicals, doctoral dissertations, musicological and theoretical treatises, and other miscellaneous items. All microform materials are denoted by an MF or MC in front of the call number. These are located in special files near the circulation desk. Please ask for microfiche or microfilm materials at the circulation desk.
